DR. JILL McCABE COMMENT ON ACTION BY GOVERNOR McAULIFFE TO CURB VIRGINIA GUN VIOLENCE
ASHBURN – Dr. Jill McCabe – pediatric emergency physician, mom, small business owner and candidate for the Virginia’s 13th Senate District – released the statement below on Gov. McAuliffe’s actions to curb gun violence earlier today:
“I thank Governor McAuliffe for today’s measures to keep our communities safer from gun violence.
“I support these initiatives to trace guns used in crimes, to establish a tip line where citizens can report illegal gun activity and to strengthen enforcement of Virginia's existing gun laws.
“As a doctor, I know that in hospitals across our country, gun violence in considered a public health issue. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, firearm-related deaths continue as one of the top three causes of death in American youth.
“My opponent, Dick Black, is bolstered by the National Rifle Association. His reckless policies allow guns to end up in the hands of anyone, including criminals and people who are mentally unstable. He voted to allow guns on public school campuses and led the fight to allow guns in airports and in bars where alcohol is served. His position on guns is dangerous and extreme.
“I respect the Second Amendment. I grew up hunting, and my family has guns in our home because my husband is in law enforcement.
“But we all know there are some who should not have access to guns, and that with rights come responsibilities. That’s commonsense, and they why I comment the Governor for his executive order today.”
